Two for one

Sorry I didn’t post last week for Writing Wednesday. I fell asleep after reading “Pride and Prejudice and Zombies.” Here are two posts for the price of one to make up for my absence.

In honor of Whitney

When I heard the news about Whitney Houston’s passing it hurt my heart. This was worse than when Michael Jackson died, and I loved his music. Sure I didn’t know her personally, but Nippy was like the crazy favorite aunt of my head. You wanted her to get her life together because you loved her. For the record I blame Bobby Brown! My friends and I say we’re going to make a tribute video to Whitney during our next road trip. I believe it will be a YouTube sensation (meaning all of us and about three other people will watch it). A Whitney tribute won’t be complete without these songs:

How Will I Know? I do a killer rendition of my favorite Whitney song ever and will sing it in public with no qualms. It comes with choreography too.

I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me). Don’t you want to dance after hearing this song?

I'm Your Baby Tonight. I love costume changes in music videos, and Whitney pays homage to the greats such as Audrey Hepburn and the Supremes.

I Will Always Love You. Dolly should be proud of this rendition on “The Bodyguard" soundtrack. This was Whitney's signature song.

I'm Every Woman. I love the original by Chaka Khan, but I love, love, love Whitney’s version.

Count on Me. This is the quintessential friend song from the quintessential black woman friend movie “Waiting to Exhale.”

I Love the Lord. Nippy took us to church on “The Preacher’s Wife” soundtrack with this song.

Heartbreak Hotel. Whitney was joined by two powerhouse vocalists, Kelly Price and Faith Evans, on this ode to a relationship gone wrong.

One of Those Days. I always just want to sit back and read a book after hearing this song.

Same Script, Different Cast. Deborah Cox joined Whitney on this single. The musical dialogue in the song was amazing.

Million Dollar Bill. I shimmy around every time I hear this song. It’s an easy breezy ode to a good love.
How did you feel about Nippy's passing? What song would you sing for a tribute?

An Evening with Drizzy

By the time most of you read this I will be jamming with my homegirl at the Drake concert. Drizzy has come a long way from his days as Jimmy on “Degrassi.” I wasn’t immediately won over by Drake when he first came on the scene. Then I heard “Closer” on his mixtape “Comeback Season” and decided he was actually a good rapper. Sometimes he’s a little too emo for my taste, but I like him enough to get concert tickets. I had half a mind to make a giant poster inviting him to join my homie and me for turkey burgers on us. Drake sometimes raps like he needs a real friend. But I had no time to make the poster. Oh well, I can’t wait to hear these lines from my favorite songs at the concert:

Closer
I've been Urkel for some years it's better bein' Jaleel
Though I rock, lean, snap it's better bein' this real

Successful
Nickels for my thoughts, dimes in my bed
Quarters of the Kush shape the lines in my head

Best I Ever Had
Sweat pants, hair tied, chilling with no makeup on
That’s when you’re the prettiest
I hope that you don’t take it wrong

Over
So they tell me that they love me, I know better than that,
It’s just game, It’s just what comes with the fame

Find Your Love
I'm more than just an option
Hey, Hey, Hey
Refuse to be forgotten
Hey, Hey, Hey
I took a chance with my heart
Hey, Hey, Hey
And I feel it taking over

Miss Me
I said tell me what's really goin' on
Drizzy back up in this thing I'm ready
What's happenin?

Fancy
Intelligent too ooh you're my sweetheart
I've always liked my women book and street smart
Long as they got a little class like half days
And the confidence to overlook my past ways
Headlines
I be yelling out money over everything money on my mind.
Then she wanna ask when it got so empty.
Tell her I apologize
Happened over time.

Make Me Proud
Sound so smart like you graduated college
Like you went to Yale but you probably went to Howard
Knowing you, weekend in Miami tryna study by the pool
Couple things due but you always get it done

Marvin’s Room
I'm just sayin', you could do better
Tell me have you heard that lately
I'm just sayin' you could do better
And I'll start hatin', only if you make me

Ashton Martin Music
I'm urgin' all daughters to kiss they mothers
With those lips that all that lipstick covers
You're never too grown up to miss and hug her

Which Drake songs get you jamming? Am I the only one who feels like he has very few real friends?
